KOZHIKODE: ‘The little blue pill’ has done wonders to many with erectile dysfunction. But an overdose has also proven fatal. What if you get a safer option to spice up the bed? Grab it with both hands, much like Kerala. The state is fast emerging a cool market for vacuum therapy devices to deal with the condition.

Companies say they sell close to 100 devices a month in the state, particularly through online orders. The hand-operated device helps to achieve and maintain erection by drawing blood into the penis by suction. Experts say the device is largely being used by diabetic patients above 45 years.

While companies pitch the product to help couples recapture the spark in a failing relationship, doctors say results could vary depending on the patient. Kozhikode Medical College Department of Genitourinary professor A V Venugopalan, says it won’t give the desired result for all the people. “We recommend the device to select patients.

They need to undergo counselling before using such a device, though it is comparatively safe,” he said. Diabetologist P Suresh Kumar said a majority of patients buy the device online as they are hesitant to reveal their particular problem to a doctor. “One should consult a doctor before using the device as it is dangerous for patients with certain medical conditions,” he said. “The concept of the device is totally deviant from the methods of erectile dysfunction treatments to date,” said Vimal KR, chairman of Erectaid, a company selling the vacuum therapy device in the state.
