KOCHI: Two persons were killed and two others seriously injured when a mini-tipper truck hit people standing on a median for crossing the road on the National Highway 66 in Chalikkavattom near Vyttila on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Sruthi M S (20), Mappilaparambil House, Aroor and Anish Sasi (48) from Achu Nivas, Ezhupuznna South, Cherthala.
The incident occurred at around 9 AM on the NH stretch near Gold Souk Mall. According to police, the driver of a truck coming from Palarivattom side to Vyttila lost control of the vehicle and the truck climbed on the median near Chalikkavattom, hitting five persons standing on the median in order to cross the road. Police said that the driver attempted to save a pedestrian and entered to the road suddenly, subsequently losing the control over the vehicle. The injured were rushed to the Ernakulam Medical Centre Hospital for medical aid.
The hospital authorities said, Sruthi who sustained severe injuries on head and body succumbed to injuries at 1.15 PM while Anish breathed his last at 4 PM. The injured others, Nisha K P (34), Padinjarenellikal, Kumbalam and Sulaiman P A (52), Palampallil House, Ezhupuznna South, Cherthala, are still undergoing treatment at Ernakulam Medical Centre. Meanwhile another person who suffered minor injuries was discharged after being administered first aid.
Soon after the incident, cops from Edappally traffic police station reached the spot, impounded the truck and arrested the driver. The road was blocked after the accident and heavy traffic jam ensued on the road for about an hour.
