The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) strongly opposed his bail plea. The CBI said, Karti should not be granted bail as he had "already destroyed evidence" and that he was a "very influential" person. His lawyers denied allegations of tampering with evidence.
Karti’s lawyers claimed that the CBI was trying prove his connection with Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Ltd, a private company, which allegedly received a bribe of Rs 10 lakh, despite not being related to it.
The CBI had initially alleged that Karti received Rs 10 lakh as a bribe for facilitating the FIPB clearance to INX Media. later, it revised the figure to $1 million.
Karti was arrested in Chennai soon after he returned from United Kingdomon on February 28, based on the statements of INX Media promoters Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.

Indrani Mukerjea is currently in the Mumbai prison in connection with her daughter, Sheena Bora's murder case.
