A suspected ISIS terrorist was killed in a house on the outskirts of the city after a 12-hour long operation to capture him alive. The terror suspect Saifullah was killed in an exchange of fire with the police. He is suspected to be linked with the blast in the Bhopal-Ujjain train yesterday, police said.

Below is a detailed timeline of the ATS operation:

- At around 4 pm yesterday (March 7), the first alert was issued about an ongoing operation by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) tackling a holed up terror suspect Saifullah in Thakurganj area of Lucknow.

- Reports about shots being exchanged between the suspect and the security forces kept coming in.

- In a press conference, while the operation was still going on, UP’s Law and Order additional director general (ADG) Daljit Chaudhury said that they had received inputs about the presence of some suspects in Kanpur and Lucknow. They had begun suspecting early on that the terror suspect, Saifullah, belonged to Lucknow.

- After the tip-off, ATS approached the house where the suspect was reportedly spotted. “The moment we knocked the door, the suspect locked the room and then we heard a sound of cocking of pistol,” ATS inspector general (IG) Aseem Arun said. And that was when the gun battle began.

- ATS, with the intention of nabbing the suspect alive, used chili bombs to force him out of his hiding. But that did not work. "He kept firing intermittently”,  Arun informed at around 6:30 pm, on Tuesday (while the operation was ongoing).

- In between the operation, there was a confusion if another suspected terrorist was also holed up inside with Saifullah. "Since we were using tube cameras to ascertain the details (of the suspected terrorists), the image was not very clear, and it appeared that there may be two terrorists holed up in the house," Arun said.

- It was also reported by NDTV that a police tried to make Saifullah speak with his brother (via phone) at around 5:50 pm, who had urged the former to surrender. But the terror suspect reportedly replied, "I won't, I want martyrdom."

- The ATS commandoes eventually stormed inside the house (after issuing a warning to the terrorist), Arun said. "The suspected terrorist then fired at the ATS commandoes, which was then appropriately retaliated by the ATS commandoes. After this, two rooms were thoroughly searched and checked, and the person identified as Saifullah was found dead.”

Watch video of the press briefing by the security forces:

- The operation continued till Wednesday morning and concluded after Saifullah was gunned down. He reportedly belonged to the ISIS Khorasan module.

- Eight pistols, 650 rounds of ammo, 50 fired rounds, explosives materials, gold, cash, passports and SIM cards recovered. Tracking 2 more persons: IG ATS Arun said on Wednesday afternoon.

- Home Minister Rajnath Singh, meanwhile, may make a statement in the Parliament tomorrow on the killing of the suspected ISIS terrorist in Lucknow and blast in a train at Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh, according to official sources.
