Man charged with sedition for celebrating Pakistan victory

A 35-year-old man from Karnataka was arrested for raising pro-Pakistan slogans while celebrations erupted in Kashmir with separatist leaders congratulating Pakistan for clinching the title.

HAVERI:  A man has been charged with sedition for celebrating Pakistan's win over India in the Champions Trophy cricket tournament on Sunday. Police in Savanur in Haveri district of Karnataka arrested Shabir Ahmed (35) for raising pro-Pakistan slogans while celebrating India’s defeat and slapped sedition charges against him on Monday night.

Based on a complaint, the Savanur police registered an FIR against Shabir Ahmed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code including Section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion race, place of birth, residence, language etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Shabir Ahmed is is currently in judicial custody.

According to the FIR filed Monday, June 19 (a copy of which is with New Indian Express), the alleged celebrations took place soon after the match at around 9.45 pm. After India lost the match, Shabbir burst crackers and cried Pakistan Zindabad, the complaint read.

The complaint was filed by one Ramesh Mallappa Mudugal, a resident of the town.

Haveri was not the only place where there were celebrations of India’s defeat to Pakistan. Widespread celebrations erupted in Kashmir following the match at the Oval in London, with separatist leaders congratulating Pakistan for clinching the title.

As soon as Pakistan won the match, a large number of youth hit the streets across the Valley to celebrate the win. Beating drums and singing songs, youths burst crackers and raised slogans in favour of Pakistan.

Large processions of youths were witnessed in many parts of Srinagar and elsewhere in the Valley.

Several youths marched towards the residence of moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq around 11 pm and requested him to come out to celebrate the win with them.

Mirwaiz came out of his Nigeen residence, addressed the youth and congratulated the Pakistan cricket team.

The Mirwaiz had tweeted a congratulatory message to the team, invoking a strong response from cricketer Gautam Gambhir.
