DEHRADUN: A senior journalist allegedly committed suicide on Monday at his ancestral home in Kotdwar in Pauri district.

Police said Kamal Joshi (65) might have hanged himself in the morning but it came to light around 5 pm when a friend trying his number did not get a response and asked one of his relatives to enquire. When the door of Joshi's room was pushed open his body was found hanging from an iron rod in the ceiling, they said.

No suicide note has been recovered but prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, they said.

Joshi used to live alone at his ancestral home and was a freelancer who also had a long association with news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). He was an amateur photographer too with some acclaimed photos to his credit.

Shocked, Joshi's brother and noted environmentalist Padma Shri Anil Joshi said he was hale and hearty and it was difficult to believe he took the extreme step.
