Founded in 1932, this is considered among the 'Big Three' film festivals (the other two are Cannes and Berlin). Among the awards given out at this prestigious festival are Golden Lion, Silver Lion, Lion of the Future, and Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award. It was initially called ‘The Festival of Festivals’. Founded by William Marshall, Henk van der Kolk and Dusty Cohl, the gala plays host to nearly 4,80,000 viewers every year. Famous awards given out are Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Queer Palm, Caméra d’Or, and Prix Vulcain. The invitation-only event is held in May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. The event hands out a number of prestigious awards like City of Melbourne Grand Prix for Best Short Film, BBC Knowledge Award for Best Documentary Short Film, and People’s Choice Award for Best Feature. Founded in 1960 and held in Annecy, France, the festival was held bi-annually during its initial years. It became an annual event in 1998. In addition to films being shown in various cinemas, an open-air night projection is held in the centre of the town. Operates across cities such as London, Brussels, New York, Los Angeles, Budapest, Berlin, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. It is known for screening short films from around the world. The largest independent film gala in the US showcases films made by American and international filmmakers. The gala has transformed over the years from a low-key event to an extravagant stage that hosts Hollywood celebrities and paparazzi.
