HYDERABAD: Dear Park Geun-hye...
As the first female head of state in East Asia gets impeached, a brief look on the circumstances preceding the situation in South Korea
Nearly four years ago, you were elected the first woman president of South Korea. Today, several lawmakers of your own party have voted in favour of the impeachment proceedings against you. How did things come to such a pass? Your campaign during elections was based on five visions - jobs-centered economy, tailored employment and welfare, creativity-oriented education, safe and united society and strong security measures for sustainable peace.
During your presidency, you had taken initiatives to promote peace on the Korean peninsula. And you had good relations with most of the leaders of other nations. However, links with your aide Choi Soon-sil, who allegedly exercised influence in government decisions despite not holding any official position, and the apparent extortion of money from industries have angered South Koreans. That their President was being influenced by another person was too much to digest for the citizens.
Not surprisingly, hundreds of thousands spilled out on the streets, protesting. With an approval rating of just 4 percent, you seem to have become the most unpopular leader South Korea has had over the past two decades. Now, after the impeachment vote, South Korea is staring at an economic slowdown. Hope the constitutional logjam resolves soon and South Korea gets back on the growth trail.
