Maoists blast BSNL tower in Vizag Agency

Maoists blast BSNL tower in Vizag Agency Express News Service @ Visakhapatnam A group of the banned CPI Maoists blasted a BSNL cellphone tower in Darakonda area under GK Veedhi police station limits in Visakhapatnam Agency on Wednesday night. Tension gripped GK Veedhi mandal, which is considered a Maoist hotbed, after the incident. According to sources, a group of armed Maoists militia members entered Darakonda area and blasted the equipment of the cellphone tower before taking to their heels. The incident took place at around 9.30 pm, bringing the cellphone connectivity to the area to a grinding halt. Sources said that the police informed the incident to the BSNL authorities and a technical team would visit the spot soon to ascertain the damage. Visakhapatnam Rural superintendent of police Rahul Dev Sharma admitted that the red rebels had blasted the cellphone tower. "We are yet to gather the complete details about the incident. The investigation is on," he said. Police suspect that the extremists blasted the cellphone tower to disrupt the communication. The incident happened just a day after police top brass from four states—Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Odisha—conducted a meeting on anti-Maoist operations at Bhogapuram. On September 8, Maoists burnt earth movers at Nurmati village in G Madugula mandal.
